Urban cyclists will have a chance to discover different parts of downtown at the first Downtown Pedal Around starting in Civic Space Park this Sunday at 4 p.m.
Downtown Pedal Around will be a monthly get together of bikers hosted by Phoenix Spokes People and Downtown Phoenix Inc. Attendees will learn safety while biking in the city and how to ride in a group.
Phoenix Spokes People is a group that bikes for transportation and has a goal of making it safer and easier for bicyclists to get around urban areas. This isn’t the first time the organization has led group rides around the city, but for this event they will be partnering with Downtown Phoenix Inc. and are aiming to have a larger group.
The bike rides will occur once a month beginning at 4 p.m. and depart from Civic Space Park. Every month, bikers will take a different route and end at a different location. The rides are designed for beginners, experts, or anyone interested in biking in an urban setting.
The locations will be different businesses or restaurants and the bikers will be able to socialize, grab a drink, eat, and tell stories, said Brandi Porter, Marketing and Events Coordinator for Downtown Phoenix Inc.
“I really hope that this just continues to foster Phoenix’s bike culture because it’s constantly growing and we want to propel it even further,” said Porter.
R.J. Price, vice president of Downtown Phoenix Inc., intends to have themed routes every couple of months, catching more attention and helping the bikers discover different parts of downtown. Some themes may include looking at new residential buildings or a tour of all the murals around the city. Lisa Parks, president of Phoenix Spokes People, said the routes will differ each month so people can discover different areas.
“We’re just trying to bring our own flavor (to Phoenix group bike riding),” said Price. “That would be more of an opportunity of storytelling, education. The safety aspect of it is very important to us.”
With Downtown Pedal Around, Phoenix Spokes People hopes to make it easier for Phoenix residents to plan their own bike routes and feel more comfortable while biking alone or in a group setting. Phoenix Spokes People and Downtown Phoenix Inc. hope this event and others will increase biking in the community, promote downtown businesses and let people discover downtown Phoenix even further.
The first four dates are set for February 19, March 26, April 23, and May 21.
