First Friday guide: Steampunk art, Trunk Space’s anniversary and artsy stilettos

Once again, it’s time the for the First Friday Guide. Our goal is to bring you some of the best happenings around the art walk. Let’s take a look at some of tonight’s events.

Masquerade Ball & Wild West Saloon Show

Alwun House, the historic alternative-arts venue, will be kicking off its Intertemporalist Steampunk Exposition this First Friday with a costume event, live entertainment, food and drinks.¬† The art exhibit includes mixed-media contraptions, illustrations, paintings and costume props. The common theme comes from each artist’s interpretation of the steampunk movement. Steampunk can be boiled down to Victorian mechanical and steam movements melded into new configurations. The event will also feature a Wild West inspired burlesque show by Provocatease.

Live Music Series at the Arizona Center

Michael Villanueva Duo will be playing a free concert at the Grand Staircase at the Arizona Center beginning at 5 p.m. The event is the second installment of the Live Music Series at the Arizona Center that runs every First Friday and every other Thursday through May 4.

Location: 400 E. Van Buren St.

Cost: Free.

Time: 5 to 7 p.m.

Trunk Space Anniversary

The Trunk Space is celebrating its eighth anniversary this Friday. Forget the romantic candles and expensive dinner; the downtown music venue, art space, performing area and boutique is celebrating with a host of local goods. Green will be providing food for the evening, and musical entertainment will include Andrew Jackson Jihad, Liam & the Ladies and Dogreth. Artwork by Chad Knapp and Jeremy Yocum will also be featured.

Location: 1506 Grand Avenue.

Time: Doors open at 7 p.m.

Inspired Soles Artwork and Auction

Taking place at the 6th Avenue Gallery, Inspired Soles is a unique exhibit that asks the question, “What would you do with a black stiletto as a canvas?” Dozens of high-heel stilettos have been transformed into pieces of art. To accompany the shoes, each design will incorporate a¬†provocative photo collection of women wearing the shoes. The opening of the exhibit also serves as an auction, where the highest bidder will win the shoes.

Time: 6:30 to 10 p.m.

Heart of the City: ASU Edition

The A.E. England building will be home to the Heart of the City exhibit. The show is an opportunity for ASU students and local artists to show off their work. Each month, Heart of the City highlights the best up-and-coming artists from ASU and around the Valley. Tonight’s theme is Attire: Collegiate Conscious.

Location: A.E. England building, 424 N. Central Ave.

Time: 7:00 p.m.

Price: Free for students, faculty and staff (with ID). $5 for all others.
