
Nine students were elected by students on the Downtown campus to serve as senators in next year’s student government, according to ASASUD’s website.
Also, Amendments to ASASUD’s Constitution passed with 603 votes for and 85 votes against. A PIRG initiative that was also on this week’s ballot did not pass by a slim margin as it received 370 votes against and 364 votes in favor.
Current sophomore senators Joel Bumanglag, of the College of Nursing and Health Innovation, and Dustin Volz, of Barrett, the Honors College, were reelected to their seats.
Nursing freshman Sabrina Banegas was also elected as senator for the College of Nursing and Health Innovation while journalism freshman Pedro Silva was elected to represent Barrett, the Honors College.
The College of Public Programs will be represented in the Senate by criminal justice freshman Liliana Ramirez and freshman criminology write-in candidate Stephanie Ortiz.
Write-in candidate Andrew Schmiedeler, secondary education – history sophomore, was also elected and will represent the College of Teacher Education and Leadership in the Senate.
In the only competitive race among senatorial candidates, journalism sophomore Cailyn Bradley and public relations sophomore Michelle Lauer were elected as senators for the Walter Cronkite School. Bradley and Lauer received 122 and 129 votes respectively and beat out journalism freshman Alan Hersh.
Bradley said she was thrilled with the results of the election and thinks next year’s Senate will be able to get a lot done.
“There’s a lot of fresh faces with great ideas, and I think that we’ll be able to work very well together as a whole,” she said.
