ASASUD approves new legislative procedures

The ASASUD Senate unanimously approved amendments to Article V of the Downtown campus constitution Friday.

The proposed amendments dealt specifically with the organization and composition of the senate that are addressed in Article V.2 of the constitution.

The new proposal designated that a majority of senators must be present in order to conduct legislative procedures, including a motion to vote.

In order for any proposal to pass, the present senators must approve it by a simple majority vote.

Previously, Section Two did not specify how many senators needed to be present in order to conduct business or how many votes in favor of any proposal were needed for it to pass.

Other minor changes included rewording the duties of the senators and restructuring the various sub-sections contained in Section Two.

Director of Parliamentary Procedures and Chair of the Judiciary Board Lisa Diaz, journalism sophomore, said that amending Article V.2 was essential to the Senate functioning effectively.

“So far all our votes in the Senate have been unconstitutional because (the number of) votes a piece of legislation needs to pass is not defined,” she said. “It is important that we pass this so we can move on with business and move on (to) the more controversial issues involving student fees.”
