A man and a woman held a female ASU student at gunpoint near East McKinley and North Third streets Thursday, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Kimberly Rios, a 29-year-old Phoenix resident, and an unidentified male companion approached the victim at 5:10 p.m. as she was walking to her car. The suspects demanded her keys and personal belongings as Rios pointed a gun at the victim.

“The victim wasn’t giving up her belongings, and then a passer-by stopped to help,” said Sgt. Trent Crump, a spokesman for the Phoenix Police Department. “The victim told us that (Rios) said it was her lucky day because there were too many people around.”

After serving a search warrant on a west Phoenix home, Phoenix police said they found the suspect’s car, a red Jeep with a black top, and other evidence. Rios later admitted to the crime police labelled as an attempted robbery, Crump said, adding that she had been charged with three counts.

Rios’ charges include one count of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, one count of attempted armed robbery and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Crump said.

“It’s (aggravated assault) for pointing the gun at a passer-by, not the victim,” Crump said. “The gun recovered while serving this warrant turned out to be a BB gun.”

The Downtown campus posted a safety bulletin issued by ASU police stating that two male suspects committed this crime. Crump, however, contradicts this report.

“Our victim’s statement says female most definitely,” Crump said. “I don’t know where the two male description is coming from. She was wearing baggy clothes, so I can understand initial witness reports saying this, but it is not true.”

The search for the male suspect is ongoing.
