The newest restaurant addition to the bottom floor of the Walter Cronkite School opened Tuesday, following delays from its initial opening date in early July.
Bowl of Greens is advertised as a healthier option to other dining locations on campus. The restaurant serves Mediterranean food, serving salads, sandwiches and wraps.
On Monday, a whiteboard was positioned in front of the restaurant that apologized for the delay and stated its new opening date.
Jay Krishan, owner of Bowl of Greens, declined to comment about an official opening date or the reason behind the restaurant’s postponement.
Patrick Panetta, Real Estate Project Management Associate Director for ASU’s University Real Estate Development, confirmed that the Bowl of Greens project is still underway.
Panetta said he “visited on Friday and saw there was product already in the store.”
“I thought Bowl of Greens was opening today, actually,” he said Monday, adding that he “wasn’t sure” when the official opening date was.
In regard to the opening delay, Panetta said the owner, Krishan, had been “shooting for an early July opening but had to go back east because of family issues.”
Some Downtown campus students are excited about a healthier eatery opening on campus.
Nutrition major Adrianne Macapinlac said she thinks the opening is “definitely a good thing,” expressing frustration with the eating options available on the Downtown campus.
Macapinlac said the food served in Taylor Place’s cafeteria “could be better and healthier” and Devil’s Greens has become monotonous because it “has the same thing every day.”
Bowl of Greens has a unique meal plan card option which is posted on its door. The restaurant does not offer a traditional Maroon & Gold dollars plan with ASU, instead relying on a credit-card system to purchase meals, Krishan told the Downtown Devil in May.
A “now hiring” sign can also be seen outside of the restaurant space, a potential place for student employment on campus.
