CityScape tenant Vitamin T is offering its customers discounts this week to celebrate the eatery’s first year in downtown Phoenix.
Influenced by owner Aaron May’s time in Mexico, Vitamin T brings a little bit of the country’s culture downtown by highlighting the triple threat in its name — tacos, tortas and tequila.
The restaurant has successfully made changes during its short time in CityScape.
Vitamin T recently finished a makeover that expanded its overall capacity by 32 seats. Additionally, its menu now offers breakfast items to appeal to early-bird customers who can enjoy meals starting at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday.
In honor of the anniversary, Vitamin T will serve $1 tacos during all business hours until Saturday. Dos Equis drafts and Don Julio Blanco shots are $1 after 3 p.m during the week-long celebration.
Lead chef and general manager Pierce Azlin, 23, said Vitamin T wanted to be part of the downtown revitalization.
“We liked the whole idea of CityScape,” Azlin said. “Their thoughts on how downtown needs to be a staple for Arizona — we were definitely onboard with that.”
As lead chef, Azlin wanted to avoid overcomplicated recipes. With thoughts of a potential franchise in the works, the meals need to be “super simple” to make sure things run smoothly, he said.
The Vitamin T manager has several locations in mind for expansion, including Old Town Scottsdale and Mill Avenue.
Nearby venues like U.S. Airways Center and Chase Field attract large crowds, but Azlin said when nothing is going on, downtown can be a ghost town.
Shannon Fabian, 29, ordered four tacos Tuesday after hearing about the $1 deal.
“The pibil taco was my favorite. Especially the pickled onions,” Fabian said.
Krystie Reeves, 29, described her two carne asada tacos in one word: “Amazing.”
Ultimately, Vitamin T foresees great prosperity in the downtown area.
“Downtown, in the next year or so, will be one of the main attractions,” Azlin said. “It would be like either, ‘Let’s go to Tempe’, ‘Let’s go to Old Town’ or ‘Let’s go to downtown’.”
