This Sunday, Nov. 15, the “Us Girls Can Boogie Too” event will take place at Monarch Theatre at 2 p.m. The event, according to the Eventbrite listing aims “To inspire females of all ages and ethnicities to pursue their true passions in life by overcoming their fears and promoting self-love, self-worth and self-confidence.”
According to the webpage, Sunday’s event will feature live art, music, performances, a discussion panel, vendors, raffles and more. In an interview, event organizer Sofia “Pinky” Magana described what guests can expect to experience:
“A couple of all-girl dance performances. Hip-hop dancers will be there as well as live art. We’ll have a female emcee and another event called ‘She Digs Deeper,’ which my friends created. It’s a really intimate performance with 10 dance performances. Before they perform they explain what the performance is about. Sometimes it’s about pain and they’ll be vulnerable about their performance.
“We’ll also have all-female business owners and vendors, from jewelry to art to anything creative.”
Sunday’s event will also include something called Little Diva Cypher, which encourages little girls to jump on the dance floor without fear of being judged.
Magana said the heart of the event is the discussion panel, which will feature women from all different walks of life talking about being transparent about doing what they desire.
Magana is the mastermind behind it all.
“I always struggled with my self-esteem and doubting myself … so what I wanted to do was to create a place for women to be transparent in overcoming their fears, whether it be with business or with dancing.”
Sunday’s event will be the second of its kind, the first of which was held in Los Angeles. Magana said the L.A. event had a great turnout and got a lot of feedback. They even raised $500 for Work, Play, Love, the same charity they will be donating all of their proceeds to on Sunday.
The story of how “Us Girls Can Boogie Too” got involved with Work, Play, Love actually begins 45,000 feet in the air.
“One of my colleagues was on a plane ride to Guatemala, and one of the stewardesses was selling bracelets. My colleague asked what the bracelets were, and the bracelets were made by the orphans in Guatemala,” Magana said. “They only had a boy orphanage and were trying to raise money to build one for girls.”
“Us Girls Can Boogie Too” has inspired other people to create events, as well. One example is Dazzle Africa. Magana said one woman came to their event not knowing what to expect and was inspired to create an event that fundraises for African children by organizing safaris.
Magana has big dreams for “Us Girls Can Boogie Too”. She said she wants to take the event to Barcelona, Spain.
“I go to Spain a lot and I have a lot of friends there,” she said.
She said one thing she wants to do is create workshops to help girls of all ages deal with hormones and educate girls on self-mastery. She wants to have workshops on goal-setting and personal development.
People can get tickets for Sunday’s event by either going to the Eventbrite page or paying a minimum of $5 at the door. Monarch Theatre is located near Washington and First streets.
Magana did mention that if someone couldn’t pay the $5, she would not turn them away. People are always welcome to donate more.
