Downtown Digest: Blacklight yoga, a thousand paper cranes and a celebration for Selena

(Nicole Neri/DD)

Hey guys, this is Sara Edwards again filling in for TJ on the digest. This week I have some fun, entertainment-filled events you’ll want to check out! From a Selena themed party to thousands of paper cranes at Unexpected, it’s going to be a celebration all week long.

Selena Night Phoenix: Club 90s

Friday, September 7

10 p.m.

401 W. Van Buren St.

Nothing puts me in a good mood like hearing ‘Bidi Bidi Bom Bom’ or ‘Como la Flor’. So what’s better than starting the weekend with a Selena celebration? The Van Buren will celebrate the Queen of Tejano all night with heaps of Selena music and videos all night long as well as feature a few other popular Latin anthems to shake it up. Tickets and more info can be purchased here.

Chatterbox: Celebrate! One Year Anniversary Show!

Wednesday, September 5

7:30-10 p.m.

1020 N 1st Ave

Since my freshman year of college, I have fallen in love with storytelling nights and events. Chatterbox was one of the first ones I ever went to and is where I fell in love with storytelling. This Wednesday, Chatterbox celebrates its one-year anniversary of telling at Fair Trade cafe. Throughout the night, there will be music, giveaways and of course, storytelling! Sutra’s Electric Lotus

Friday, September 7

7:30 p.m.

1029 N 1st St.

What’s more relaxing and relieving than playing with glow sticks and black lights? Sutra Studios is cranking up the music and the vibes this Friday so you can let go of your weekly stress. In this First Friday yoga session, dec out in neon, luminescent paint and roll out that yoga mat for a yoga experience you’ve never witnessed before. Tickets and information can be found at the Sutra Studios website.

First Friday (Unexpected Experience)

Friday, September 7

6-11 p.m.

734 W Polk St.

If any of y’all read Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes in elementary school (and cried your eyes out because it was so beautiful) and wondered what a thousand paper cranes looked like up close, then stop by Unexpected Art Gallery this First Friday. Artist Logan Weber’s installation of 1,000 paper cranes will be on display at Unexpected and invites you to come to take a wish and leave a wish. For more details, click here.
