Hello downtown Phoenix people! It’s your favorite guide to things happening downtown, T.J. Triolo. I’ve got some presents for you in the form of things to do, unless you’re on the naughty list. Then you would get extra rewards from me in the form of chocolate wrapped in foil shaped like coal. I’ve actually gotten them before, and they were delicious.
Walkable Urbanism with Christopher Leinberger
Monday Dec. 9
A.E. England Building
424 N. Central Ave.
I’d say that living in a walkable area is really nice. Being able to walk to a lot of places I go all the time is nice. Urbanism advocate, researcher and author Christopher Leinberger is giving a talk on how walkable areas relate to providing social equality and economic development in cities. So come listen and learn the ways of walking. As a bonus, walking is a good way to get exercise in. This event is free.
Thursday Dec. 12
Phoenix Public Market
721 N. Central Ave.
If you’ve never been to Phoestivus, it’s definitely worth checking out. Whether you’re looking for cool gifts for someone special in your life or looking for interesting things to spice up your own home, Phoestivus has a massive variety of products from local vendors. As would be expected from a market event like this one, there will also be food trucks. After all, what’s a community market event without food trucks? I’ll say that there had better be hot chocolate. This event is free to attend.
Thursday Dec. 12-Sunday Dec. 15
Times vary by ticket reservation
401 E. Jefferson St.
I’ve been to Topgolf a lot of times to take advantage of the discounted nights for college students. It’s a lot of fun that involves hitting special golf balls into targets to score points. Normally it involves a huge facility that’s rooted to one place, but for this weekend Chase Field will be turned into a Topgolf stadium. If you haven’t tried Topgolf because of how far out in the suburbs it is, here’s your chance to give it a shot right in downtown. Tickets start at $45.
Snow Much Fun Day!
Saturday Dec. 14
Starts at 9 a.m.
Children’s Museum of Phoenix
215 N. Seventh St.
No, you’re not imagining things. This means there is actually going to be snow in Phoenix. In fact, it’s going to be 40 tons of it. The Children’s Museum of Phoenix is holding a snow play day, complete with Santa. It’s best to get here early though; the event only lasts as long as the snow does before it melts! This event is included with museum admission.
Arizona Fried Chicken and Beer – Chimac FestivalSunday Dec. 15
441 W. Madison St.
Apparently fried chicken and beer is a pretty popular combination around the globe; the word “chimac” is Korean word for the pairing of beer and fried chicken. This is Arizona’s first chimac festival and will feature more than a dozen local fried chicken vendors. There will even be international takes on fried chicken, so a lot of it will be of different versions. I’d love to try new types of fried chicken; sign me up! Tickets cost $4-$13.
