Downtown Digest: Historic tour, flamenco and Suns preview

Good morning, downtown Phoenix! It’s Michelle again. Our website has been down for the past week, but we are glad to be back.

Looking for something fun to do this week (besides reading stories on our website, of course)? Downtown Devil has got you covered for events.

Downtown Chamber Series

When: Monday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Alwun House at 1204 E. Roosevelt Street

Catch the last of three outdoor shows featuring the Schubert string quartet Death and the Maiden and Qais Essar.

Tickets are $20; however, there is free admission for full-time students of any age by calling ahead.

Vaccination is highly recommended, according to the Downtown Chamber Series website. Masks are required to view the indoor gallery at Alwun House, and all performing musicians and staff are vaccinated, according to the event website.

Tour of Orpheum Theatre

When: Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 12 p.m. or 1:30 p.m.

Where: Orpheum Theatre Phoenix at 203 W. Adams Street

During an hour-long tour of the historic 1929 restored theatre, attendees will get to see all public and many non-public areas.

Masks are recommended during the tour, according to the event website.

Pay-What-You-Wish Wednesday

When: Wednesday, Oct. 6 after 3 p.m.

Where: Phoenix Art Museum at 1625 N. Central Ave.

Every Wednesday from 3 – 7 p.m. enjoy free, donation-based and reduced admission to the Phoenix Art Museum’s many exhibits.

The Phoenix Art Museum strongly encourages all visitors to purchase tickets in advance to ensure a no-touch or low-touch experience, according to the museum website.

Flamenco Por La Vida

When: Thursday, Oct. 7 at 5 p.m.

Where: Crescent Ballroom at 308 N. 2nd Ave.

At this free event, enjoy a song-and-dance performance by Flamenco Por La Vida on the patio at Crescent Ballroom.

2021-22 Suns Showcase

When: Friday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m.

Where: Footprint Center at 201 E. Jefferson Street

Get a sneak peek of the Phoenix Suns team ahead of the upcoming NBA season. There will also be giveaways and performances featuring the Suns Hype and Dance teams.

The event is free, but registration is required. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the fun will start at 6 p.m.

Queer Poetry Salon

When: Saturday, Oct. 9 at 1 – 7:30 p.m.

Where: Virtual event hosted on Zoom by the Equality Arizona Foundation and the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing at Arizona State University

On Saturday, experience workshops, open mics and readings, featuring queer poets Raquel Gutiérrez and tanner menard.

This event is free and open to the public, but register ahead of time to attend.

Indigenous Peoples’ Celebration

When: Saturday, Oct. 9 at 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Where: Heard Museum at 2301 N. Central Ave.

At this free event, celebrate Indigenous art and culture with an exciting line-up of performances, speakers, artists, musicians, chefs and vendors.

Jeremy Pelt Quintet

When: Sunday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. or 9:15 p.m.

Where: The Nash at 110 E. Roosevelt Street

Enjoy a jazz performance by Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Chien Chien Lu on vibraphone, Victor Gould on piano, Jonathan Michel on bass and Allan Mednard on drums.

Tickets are $16 for students (tier 3 only) for both shows. Otherwise, tickets cost $55 for tier 1, $51 for tier 2 and $49 for tier 3 during the first show. The second show costs $49 for tier 1, $45 for tier 2 and $39 for tier 3.

Proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test is required for admission, according to The Nash website.
