It’s 12:30 a.m., and you’re hungry. What do you do? Order pizza for the 16th time on your slowly disappearing M&G Dollars? Scrounge through your roommate’s stark cereal collection? Or how about enjoy a tantalizing pork loin, grilled red pepper, onion and mushroom sandwich with a side of skinny, crispy-fried onion strings for only $9.50?

One of the best-kept secrets in downtown Phoenix, Hanny’s restaurant offers a handful of affordable Mediterranean-inspired dishes in a modern, lively atmosphere, not to mention it’s one of the only restaurants around open until 1:00 a.m. Although the menu is limited, there’s a choice of appetizers, pizzas, sandwiches or salads, the lack of variety is made up in taste and embellishment. The Prosciutto di Parma, described as their “Cadillac of pizzas” by my server, was absolutely fantastic. Instead of providing typical, overused sides (hello, French fries,) Hanny’s, located on 40 N. First St., creates each dish with a unique twist. Another one of their most popular dishes, the roast beef sandwich, comes with a pile of Parmesan-dusted fried onion strings, cherry tomatoes and cantaloupe slices.

Complimenting the unique menu, the atmosphere of Hanny’s was unlike anything I have ever experienced. Although I was slightly intimated when I first walked in and saw white linen tablecloths adorned with fresh flowers and candles, I quickly recanted my uneasiness as the host led us through the sea of talkative tables.

Originally a department store, the vaulted ceilings and mirrored wall provide an open, comfortable feeling, while the stark cement walls and earthly color scheme create an intimate contrast. It’s lively but not too loud. Despite the live disc jockey, the setting was private enough to carry on a full conversation without interruption. The infamous empty elevator shaft with a see-through floor and the funhouse-styled bathrooms are also great conversation starters. (Yes, they really do resemble a funhouse. Confused? So was I.)

The greatest part about this place, though, is that it provides a fantastic meal at an even better price. The most expensive thing on the menu was the Tuscan Steak and even that was only $22.

Whether you’re taking a new date or some old friends, Hanny’s is the perfect escape from the collegiate diet without the guilt of breaking the bank, something all of us can appreciate.
