Several amendments to downtown zoning ordinances were passed by city council on Wednesday.
George Washington Carver High School
City council approved rezoning application Z-72-16-8 for George Washington Carver High School, located at the Southwest Corner of Fourth Street and Grant Street. This zoning ordinance gives a historic preservation overlay to the school.
Warehouse Historic Properties
City council approved an update that allows greater height and density for historic properties in the Warehouse District of Downtown Code. The request extends the maximum height from 80 to 140 feet for historically designated properties within the Warehouse District.
Woodland Arts Center
City council addressed the need to expand the Van Buren Character Area of the Downtown Code as well as requirements for historically designated structures to conform to Downtown Code setbacks and building heights. The property involved is a historic church on Ninth Avenue and Woodland. The church is being transformed by Charlie Levy and Erick Harrell into the Woodland Arts Center. Council also approved the rezoning application for the Woodland Arts Center. The previous zoning code did not allow the property to be used for commercial purposes.
Vice Mayor
Councilwoman Laura Pastor was also elected Vice Mayor of Phoenix, replacing former Vice Mayor Kate Gallego.
Correction: March 2, 2017
An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Laura Pastor was nominated to be vice mayor during Wednesday’s meeting. It has been updated to show she was elected.
