Focus. Flash. Phoenix: Bees in the city

As my East Coast family and friends received another late Christmas present — a whopping foot-and-a-half of snow to add onto the pre-existing 4 feet — I was strolling down the block in shorts and flip flops, breathing in the dry, warm air.

I stopped when I heard buzzing.

Dozens of bees were flying around rows of flowery bushes in their pollination session. I took some photos and excitedly uploaded them onto my laptop so I could check them out.

But as I cropped them and the resolution became grainy, I knew I had to try something new — I had to shoot in RAW!

So I went back to my bee friends the next day and took more pictures, enjoying my time in the miniature world of pollination. Using my telephoto lens and standing far enough away so I wouldn’t get stung (but zooming in to 200mm), I took a bunch of shots and came out with several that I liked. Shooting in RAW is a great way to take macro images without messing with the quality of the photo.

Spring is just around the corner, and all you natives and those used to warm weather should make sure to appreciate the little things, like pretty lavender flowers and their black-and-yellow pals.
