The Goofies squared off against Saucin’ on Ya On Monday night at the Arizona State University Downtown Campus. This showdown kicked off 3 versus 3 intramural basketball, one of ASU’s most popular intramural sports at the Sun Devil Fitness Complex (SDFC).

ASU Downtown students flooded the third-floor gymnasium, and the players were eager to finally dribble a basketball in their hands again.

The Goofies, made up of Rob Werner, Noah Lau and Manuel Coronel, battled the Saucin’ on Ya’s, made up of Owen Nobis, Adam Voeller, Zachary Workman and Zachary Garrett. The Goofies ultimately took victory with a 21 to 15 win.

“This whole day I’ve been looking forward to playing this game just because I knew it was going to be a ton of fun. I’m with some of my closest friends that I’ve known forever.” Saucin’ on Ya’s Owen Nobis said.

Team Saucin’ on Ya played neck and neck with the Goofies almost the entire night, tying the score at 15, before the Goofies began to pull away. The Goofies overwhelming height and spot on three-point shooting ultimately lead them to victory.

The Goofies were on fire. Coronel was unstoppable from 3-point range during the first half of the game. He ended with a game high 11 points, in addition to 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Lau and Werner combined for the other 10 points.

Saucin’ on Ya’s effort was led by Voeller, whose mesmerizing dribble moves gained his team 7 points. Nobis, Garrett and Workman combined for Saucin’ on Ya’s final 8 points of the night.

Lau, who was on the 5 versus 5 intramural championship basketball team last season, was modest about The Goofies victory.

“It’s not a huge deal. Win or lose it doesn’t really matter. We’re just out here to have fun,” Lau said.

Despite losing, Nobis felt his team performed well. He was critical for his team on the glass, devouring a game high 12 rebounds, in addition to scoring 4 points.

Nobis said he sees the sport as a great way to get his competitiveness and anger out, all while enjoying quality time with his friends.

“The first few (minutes), we started off incredible. We hit out shots, but then as the game kept going we kind of kept getting gassed…(the Goofies) kept hitting their threes which we didn’t do” noted Nobis, adding that “It’s a learning process, but it was fun. I had a good time.”

Lau, a sophomore currently majoring in sports journalism emphasized similar views after the win, and said that intramural is a great way to stay connected with his friends because everyday student life is so busy.
