The Kony 2012 campaign’s “Cover the Night” event came to downtown Phoenix Friday, with small groups of activists placing more than 200 posters around the city.
Supporters of the Kony 2012 campaign also used chalk and stencils to leave messages like “stop at nothing” and “one thing we can all agree on,” each with the tag of “Stop Kony 2012.”
The night of action was carried out mostly by college students and other people in their teens and 20s. This demographic is much younger on average than the turnout for downtown’s last national activism event, Occupy Phoenix.
The event was part of a national effort coordinated by Invisible Children to raise awareness of Joseph Kony, the head of the Ugandan militant group, the Lord’s Resistance Army.
“It is our hope that our citizens will continue to conduct themselves in a lawful manner as they have in past events. Our officers will respond to complaints if they occur,” officer James R. Holmes said before the event.
Holmes said Phoenix has ordinances against hanging signs on city property, and warned that participants would have to be careful about putting posters on private property.
