Lo-Lo’s Chicken and Waffles will be moving to a larger venue by summer 2012, about 10 years after it opened downtown, its owner said.
The popular restaurant, which also has a location in Scottsdale, will be moving from its current spot on the corner of Yuma Street and South Central Avenue to a much larger building less than 200 feet away.
The new Lo-Lo’s location will offer more seating for customers, said Larry “Lo-Lo” White, the restaurant’s owner. The larger location will also mean customers will not have to wait in the sun and heat for to-go orders.
White said that he wants to make the restaurant more accessible for customers by expanding both the parking lot and the restaurant. He said he is also looking forward to having a larger kitchen for Lo-Lo’s.
“We have to turn away a lot of catering jobs because we just don’t have enough room in the kitchen,” White said, adding that he hopes the larger kitchen in the restaurant’s new location will offer greater opportunity for catering.
During meal rush hours, Lo-Lo’s often opens an additional outdoor section of up to 20 people due to crowding indoors, its employees said.
Freshman criminology and criminal justice student Gabriel Radley, who visited Lo-Lo’s for the first time this week, said the restaurant was student-friendly. It is close to the campus, and there is also a 50 percent discount for ASU students on Monday through Thursday between 2 and 5 p.m., he said.
The new location will undergo construction this year in preparation for its tentative opening next summer, White said. The current location will remain fully operational during preparation for the new Lo-Lo’s opening, closing its doors only once their new facilities are ready.
