Making sense of it all: last week’s city council controversies explained

Two public servants tied up in a variety of downtown controversies were appointed to boards governing city business last week.

Emilio Gaynor was appointed to the Planning Commission, which advises the City Council on matters concerning building and improvements to the city. John “Jack” Wilenchik was appointed to the Historic Preservation Commission.

Their appointments have brought up an interconnected web of city officials, community members and regulatory organizations in conflict. This includes controversy regarding the building and zoning of medical marijuana facilities, the removal of over half of an important city panel called the Board of Adjustments as a result, a new appointment to the Historic Preservation Commission as well as District 7 Councilman Michael Nowakowski’s recall election.
