Nine places to volunteer downtown

Do you want to get involved with your downtown community? Here are nine places to volunteer ranging from crisis response to gardening. (Nikiana Medansky/DD)

Whether you’re looking for ways to get involved with the community in downtown Phoenix or you’re passionate about helping others, volunteering can be an exciting way to connect with people while making a difference in someone’s life. Downtown has several volunteer opportunities that are both exciting and charitable. From the YMCA to the Japanese Friendship Garden, you’re sure to find a way to give back to the community.

Lincoln Family Downtown YMCA — 350 N. 1st Avenue — 602-257-5138
Whether you want to help in the childcare department or assist with fundraising, the YMCA has several volunteer opportunities. Member Experience Coordinator Sara Lupien said volunteers from all walks of life join for a variety of reasons. The YMCA regularly uses volunteers for their facilities, but the Y Race — a family 5k, 10k and half marathon happening on Oct. 17 — will require extra volunteers.

Lupien said anyone looking to volunteer can come into the branch and fill out an application, and those looking to volunteer at the Y Race can contact the race director, John Biel, by sending him an email. Anyone age 13 and older can volunteer at any event with a parent’s permission.

The “I Have a Dream” Boutique — Phoenix First Congregational UCC — 1407 N. 2nd Street

The “I Have a Dream” boutique is an LGBTQ clothing bank where volunteers can sort and arrange clothing as well as assist shoppers.Run by Rebel & Divine UCC Pastor Jeffrey Dirrim, the boutique is a safe place for youth and young adults to come. Anyone is welcome to volunteer, and the program takes donations as well.

Phoenix Fire — Crisis Response/EMT — 2625 S 19th Ave Phoenix — 602-261-8849

If you are at least 18 years old and EMT certified, you can volunteer for the Phoenix Fire Department’s Crisis Response Unit. While volunteering, you will assist groups or individuals who have experienced a crisis.

My Phoenix My Park — Citizen Forester — 200 W. Washington Street, Phoenix City Hall 16th Floor — 602 534-8222

If you love gardening, then volunteering for My Phoenix My Park is a plant-astic opportunity for you to plant and help care for trees. Interested volunteers can contact Emmett Boyd for information.

The Japanese Friendship Garden — 1125 N. 3rd Ave. — 602-274-8700 / 602-256-3204

Volunteering at the Japanese Friendship Garden is another great place to donate your time if you love gardening. But volunteers don’t just garden — they can also give private tours and help with school programs. Those interested can email the friendship garden.

Friends of the Library — 1221 N. Central Avenue — 602-534-5208

Volunteering at the library is always fun, and helping with Friends of the Library is no different. If you are at least 18 years old and are willing to volunteer weekly, then you can assist with online book sales as well as the Book Nook. Interested volunteers can email the library here.

Story Tour Adult Intern/Volunteer at Children’s Place — Burton Barr Central Library Children’s Place — 602-262-4698

Another great opportunity to volunteer at a library is to volunteer with Burton Barr Central Library Children’s Place. Adults age 18 or older who are willing to volunteer on a weekly basis can enjoy working with school groups, giving building tours, reading to children, helping increase library users and more. Interested in getting your hands dirty alongside your neighbors? Volunteer at Roosevelt Growhouse, the beloved community garden, every Sunday from 10 am to noon. Contact Kenny Barrett for more details.

The Gallery at City Hall — 200 W. Washington St. — 602-495-0185

Last but certainly not least is the Gallery at City Hall. If you are at least 18 years old and are willing to make a bi-weekly commitment, then you are sure to enjoy volunteering at the brand new art exhibit space. You will not only host, but teach as well.
