Official: Alarm set off by prank

The alarm that woke up many of Taylor Place’s residents around 5:30 a.m. Friday morning was most likely set off by a prank, a Taylor Place official said Monday.

Ronald Briggs, community coordinator for Taylor Place, said the alarm came on after somebody messed with a wheel connected to water pipes in the east stairwell of the second floor on Tower One.

“We’re working on trying to identify the individual,” Briggs said.

Though firefighters checked and found nothing wrong, Briggs said even the slightest turn of that wheel was enough to set off the alarm on some of the lower floors of Taylor Place and be heard by some students on some of the floors above.
