The local LGBT community and allies gathered at the Heritage Science Park Saturday and Sunday for the annual Rainbows Festival. The event had around 150 booths featuring LGBT-friendly organizations, companies and churches.

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure -- or for dozens of local artists, a fashion show. The sixth annual Untrashed Recycled Rubbish Fashion Show gives artists and community members the chance to show off the outfits they created from trash and recycled materials over the past weeks.

The Grand Avenue Festival, the annual culture, arts and music showcase happening Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. could mark the beginning of a new era for the district. Five years ago, the first festival was celebrated in what seemed like a promising time for the businesses of the area.

With stiff competition including Cibo Urban Pizzeria Cafe and Pizzeria Bianco in the neighborhood, La Piazza Locale has much to prove. But La Piazza Locale brings a little something different to the table -- literally.

Meg Bruening received federal funding from the National Institute of Health to uncover the impact of friendships and relationships on the heath of college freshmen. She hopes the study, which is set to begin next year and will last five years, will be able to predict future patterns in student body-wide health.
