Get excited, vintage-lovers, because Antique Sugar Vintage Clothing is coming to the Roosevelt District on April 17.

Originally, the store was set to open on April 3, but construction delays pushed the opening back, according to Sarah Bingham, a co-owner of Antique Sugar.

As a self-diagnosed shopaholic, I’m always on the lookout for new places to shop. There’s only so much time and money you can spend at Forever 21 or H&M. Plus, local vintage stores give me the opportunity to purchase unique items for my ever-expanding wardrobe.

Unfortunately, I was not able to visit Antique Sugar in person, but I browsed their Etsy store. I fell in love with a pair of pink strappy heels and a black and white plaid wool overcoat from the 1960’s (if only it wasn’t so hot here). If you’re planning on attending a “Mad Men” themed costume party I highly suggest checking out Antique Sugar.

Bingham said she paired up with her longtime friend, Annamarie Sanchez, to open their own vintage store after cultivating years of their own vintage shopping experiences. They started with eBay and eventually expanded the store into what it is today.

According to their website, Antique Sugar has been selling their fashionable goodies from the past century since 2010. They sell a wide range of women’s clothing and accessories, and even menswear. So, good news, your boyfriend no longer has an excuse to not go vintage shopping with you!

Antique Sugar currently resides in the Melrose District, which is about a 10 minute drive from its new location. There, they joined forces with Zinnia’s at Melrose, a vintage home décor shop.

“The move will be bittersweet for us. We’re going to miss our partners in crime at Zinnia’s so much, but we’re super excited for this new chapter and to be a part of all the amazing things happening downtown,” Bingham said in a recent press release.

The move to downtown Phoenix also occurred, in part, because of landlord issues. Bingham said the air conditioning went out over the summer, which, with Arizona’s crippling heat, negatively affected business. Additionally, their lease was up and Bingham and Sanchez felt the time was right to head downtown.

“I’m sad to leave Melrose, but I feel like it’s the right decision with the way downtown is growing. I’m looking forward to the exciting new environment,” said Sanchez in the same press release.

Fortunately, if you are in the Melrose area, a booth of Antique Sugar’s merchandise will still be available at Zinnia’s. However, I’m pretty excited a full selection will be available just a few blocks from my dorm.

Plus, shoppers get 30 percent off their first purchase at the new location, and all clearance items at the shop in Melrose are now 75 percent off. I’m definitely going to be taking advantage of that discount. I’m now taking volunteers to come with me on a shopping trip when April rolls around.

Just browsing through the array of colorful clothing and one-of-a-kind accessories online makes me even more excited to view it all in person.

“I’d like to think [shopping at Antique Sugar] is fun … We don’t buy anything boring,” Bingham said.
