Downtown Phoenix had something extra to celebrate on July 4 this year: Central Station reopened to the public with a host of new bells and whistles, courtesy of a $3.7 million investment funded by the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

After an 11-month redesign and reconstruction project, Central Station now boasts fabric canopies that shade much of the area, along with 30 trees planted around the area, as well as yellow bike lockers, additional seating, corner kiosks and greater night-time lighting.

The station also now incorporates new sustainable features such as the use of solar energy and low-flow plumbing fixtures.

With added security, chilled water fountains and a sign displaying a timeline glance at the history of public transportation in Phoenix, students can expect a more pleasant (and less noisy) walk to the light rail when they return this fall.
