A national fitness franchise is adding another Arizona location in CityScape in a few months.

The 3,150-square-foot studio on Jefferson and First streets is one of four new locations Orangetheory Fitness is opening to add to its 15 other locations in Arizona.

“We know that there’s plenty of people at CityScape who are working, and we wanted to cater to downtown working clients as well as residents,” said Jennifer Ayala, lead trainer at Orangetheory’s downtown location. “CityScape and downtown is exploding so quickly, and a lot of current members requested to come to CityScape.”

This contemporary-style fitness studio offers equipment that provides a one-hour workout including treadmill interval training, indoor rowing and a focus on weights and resistance training.

Each person receives a heart monitor attached around the chest that records a five-zone interval training session during the workout, which is known as “Orange 60.” The idea is to show five different levels of progression throughout the workout with the goal to reach about 80 percent of your maximum heart rate for 12 to 20 minutes, which results in higher energy levels and an increased metabolic rate.

Kelsey Pavesic, an employee of Orangetheory Fitness who formerly worked at the Scottsdale and Paradise Valley locations, said reaching that level of heart rate has positive effects on the body during the workout and up to 24 to 36 hours later.

“When you reach this ‘orange zone,’ which is about 80-84 percent of your maximum heart rate, your body will experience excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, or EPOC,” Pavesic said. “You not only get a great workout but continue to burn calories for the next day. You’re essentially working out at a level that exhausts the body and causes it to burn calories while recovering.”

Cameron Norwood, studio manager at three locations including CityScape, said science motivates the theory behind the Orangetheory workout.

“Everyone has a busy schedule between work and their personal lives. (Orangetheory’s) success is based off the principles of (high-intensity interval training),” Norwood said in an email. “You burn more calories in a shorter time. So the science behind the workout makes it perfect for the busy lives of those working and living downtown.”

Orangetheory will be opening within 60-90 days.

The location is offering memberships at discounted rates before opening day with rate reservations known as the Founding Member Rate, which allow those interested to join at the lowest rate with no charge, Ayala said.

The rate is lower than the company’s corporate discount, she said. If a new member decides to change his or her mind before opening day, he or she can call and cancel.
