So you graduated. Then what? ‘After Cronkite’ is a series of events designed to help prepare graduating Cronkite students for the real world.
Think you know what it takes? Think again.
Tim McGuire, Frank Russell Chair for the business of journalism at the Walter Cronkite School, said former Cronkite student Alyssa Aalmo found out the hard way. She was having difficulty and kept asking for help, he said.
McGuire said Aalmo inspired him to write a proposal for the After Cronkite series and presented it to Associate Dean Kristin Gilger. From there it was created and is set to take place on select Fridays beginning on Feb. 4.
“Know Thyself! Now Tell Others” is the first of nine events to take place during the spring semester. The focus is on social media and how to use it properly so that it does not affect students and alumni in a negative manner.
Presenter Jody Brannon, national director of the Carnegie-Knight News21 journalism initiative, said web presence is important, but for potential employers things like poor AP Style or inappropriate postings might prevent you from getting that interview which, students may soon find out, is half the battle.
“Polish everything that’s out there” she said.
Before you can even get the interview, however, your resume must be relevant, said Michael Wong, director of career services. Wong will present “Sloppy Resumes: Boring Letters” on Feb. 25. Liz Smith, a certified professional resume writer, will be there to help students and alumni spruce up their resumes.
“The information is pertinent to (Cronkite students),” Wong said. “Another resume service won’t be specialized.”
Currently, After Cronkite is in the test period and student feedback will determine if it will be an ongoing series, McGuire said.
“If only three or four students show up, we won’t continue,” he said.
Chris Cash, a broadcast senior, said he’s interested in attending, especially the “Sloppy Resumes: Boring Letters” seminar.
Cash said he will be graduating soon and will need all the help he can get.
