The colder temperatures during the fall season increase the amount of bearable outdoor hours for the city. These cooler months are a great time to go out and engage in exercise activity. (Nikiana Medansky/DD)

The blistering, hot Arizona sun has been replaced with a steady chill in the air. Fall is here– finally!

With this change in the weather, it’s obvious that the variety of activities one can do on any given day to stay active have increased twofold.

So what are these activities and how can downtown residents make the most of this fall?

Now that it’s cooler, people aren’t limited to working out indoors. That’s probably the biggest change fall offers to people living in Arizona in general.

But downtown Phoenix in particular really helps downtown residents celebrate the arrival of cooling weather, leading up to the holiday season.

Some events that are going on this fall/winter season are:

  1. Turkey Day Run Phoenix: This annual event brings runners, joggers and walkers in the downtown area together in a run that will be perfect for building up your appetite in the evening! It starts at 8 a.m. on Nov. 27 at the Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza by the Capitol Building on 16th Avenue and Washington Street.
  2. Bicycle Parade of Lights: Nov. 29 at 6:45 p.m. will be the first ever Bicycle Parade of Lights! Join the fun at the Arizona Center as you light up your bike and take part in a parade that will be held annually in the downtown area.
  3. Meet Me Downtown: This FitPHX initiative that’s partnered with local downtown Phoenix venues is offering residents of the downtown area the opportunity to come out and engage the greater community in weekly walks, taking place Mondays at 5:15 p.m., around downtown.
  4. CitySkate: Ice skate with the view of the downtown Phoenix skyline above you this holiday season starting Nov. 29! Not only is this a great way to stay active, you’ll also get to see the tree-lighting ceremony. Be active and enjoy the holiday season at this fabulous event!

Make it a point this holiday season to broaden those horizons. Get out there and do something that’s new to you! Any of the events above offer a great way to celebrate the holiday season in an active way.

The best way to ensure that physical activity is integrated into your everyday routine is to look at it as a lifestyle, not just methodology. When you start looking at physical activity as a lifestyle, your source of entertainment, your outlets and essentially everything that you do will incorporate an aspect of fitness. Truly, this is the goal.

When fitness can blend seamlessly into your life, you know that you’re on the right track to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Start these cold months by incorporating these fun events into your schedules!

Stay healthy, my friends!
