I’ve had Photoshop for years now and still don’t understand how to utilize approximately 97.8 percent of the tools the program has to offer. I was excited when I heard this week’s challenge: to manipulate a photograph I’ve taken, using a Photoshop Tutorial. I finally ventured outside of the effects of brightness, the magic wand and the saturation feature.

I decided I wanted to experiment with curves for the first time to create a vignette surrounding the singer of a band. I referred to a minute-and-a-half video by Photoshop Video Tutorials (creative name, I know) called, “Photoshop Tutorial: Creating a Vignette with Curves [60 Seconds] Beginner.” I was immediately drawn to this video because my attention span cannot handle tutorials that are much longer than two minutes. I’m not sure if this is cheating, but I only completed half of the tutorial before I stopped editing, because I was happy with the way the photo looked.

As far as the photo itself goes, I took it Friday night at Jobot Coffee and Dining. I was wandering around with a few friends, enjoying the life that Third Friday brings to Roosevelt and thought I’d catch a few pictures of the band playing in celebration of Jobot’s anniversary. The band members had a cool look, which made the photo easy to capture.

I must say, this is only the beginning of my experimentation with curves.
