Focus. Flash. Phoenix: The Juggler

For my photojournalism class, we were assigned a business in the area to profile. Luckily for me, I was the student who was forgotten and wasn’t assigned anything. So, I picked the craziest location I could think of: the Firehouse Gallery.

There, artists live together to focus and create work. Korbin Austin, photographed above, is a resident who performs onstage at First Fridays. I asked him to show me what he would be doing if I wasn’t present. He responded with hesitation and said he’d be practicing. I asked him to show me how it’s done.

Austin broke out the pins and all hell broke loose. He tossed and spun them around to practice new material. Juggling was something I never really saw before. Now, maybe I was sheltered and never had a clown at a birthday party, but I could not look away — even when some attempts failed and pins flew at me.

I’ve been able to experience many locations in downtown Phoenix, but Firehouse is always a special one. To capture this photo I had an aperture of f/2.8 and a corresponding shutter speed of 1/2500 of a second to freeze the action.
