Claim third-party review necessary
Five ASASUD 2010-11 senators announced Thursday they will block any action by ASASUD until President and Vice-President-elects junior Christian Vasquez and freshman Jessica Abercrombie allow a third-party to review the election decisions that resulted in the disqualification of freshmen Andres Cano and Vaughn Hillyard.
In a letter to Vasquez and Abercrombie, senators Michelle Lauer, Stephanie Ortiz, Andrew Schmiedeler, Pedro Silva and Dustin Volz said they will not approve a budget for ASASUD, appoint new senators or executive board members unless Vasquez and Abercrombie reverse their decision to allow a third-party review.
“We will refuse to allow ASASUD to continue without a proper and fair review of the three-point violation that disqualified Andres Cano and Vaughn Hillyard,” the senators said in the letter.
A review by the supreme court of the Tempe or West campuses would put a proper end to the election fiasco that has resulted, the senators said in the letter.
“A fair, unbiased review of the elections results will set a tone of honesty and legitimacy, which has currently been robbed from ASASUD, instead replaced with a tone of scandal and self-serving bias,” the senators said in the letter.
The senators said in the letter they do their actions reluctantly but find the decision by Vasquez and Abercrombie shameful and contradictory to their campaign message of “Students First.”
“We are not motivated by spite or malice, but with the intent to demonstrate a truly fair, democratic student government,” the senators said in the letter. “If you refuse to be fair, you must be held accountable.”
