These pinatas are not your traditional candy-filled containers, and you definitely can’t hit them with a stick.
The sixth annual Mutant Pinatas Show at Bragg’s Pie Factory ran from March 1 to March 3, showcasing artistic interpretations of the familiar Mexican vessel. The pinata creators ranged from elementary students to local artists.
Bragg’s Pie Factory owner Beatrice Moore also participated in the fun by creating an oriental-themed piece entitled “Zen and the Art of Mutant Pinata Maintenance.”
“It is a really fun show because people are not trying to make fine art. People just really have let their imagination run and do whatever they want,” Moore said.
The opening night featured performances from rapper Space-Alien Donald. Babs A’delic, a professional clown involved in Strange Family Circus, performed as a live pinata, displaying herself as a hanging piece of art.
“It is one of my favorite art shows of the year because it is a community art show. Anyone who wants to make something for it can be in it. A lot of art events are not like that so I always try to make something,” A’delic said.
On the last day, a pinata created by Joe Willie Smith and Denise Yaghmourian was available for breaking.
