DeSoto Central Market, which closed without warning on Monday, Aug. 20, hosted a three-day yard sale to sell off its supplies and furnishings.

From Sunday, Aug. 26 to Tuesday, Aug. 28 shoppers could find a wide array of both industrial and domestic kitchen equipment, bar stools, storage containers, decorations and glass barware of all shapes and sizes. According to staff, some of those who came were looking to buy supplies for their restaurants at a discount.

Omar Zamora, a past DeSoto customer and head brewer at Mother Bunch Brewing, attended the sale on Tuesday. He said when he heard of the closing that “the first feeling that came wasn’t sadness. I was taken by surprise when I heard DeSoto is closing down.”

Launched in 2015 at 915 N. Central Ave, DeSoto was a multipurpose eatery and community gathering place. It functioned as a restaurant, coffee shop, bar and hosted local events.

It would have been our third anniversary of the swing dancing event,” said managing partner Shawn Connolly on Monday.

He said the closure was a result of multiple factors and that the landlord is pursuing other avenues.

“We had a good run of it,” said Connolly.

The going-out-of-business garage sale was announced on Facebook by Samantha Calvin on behalf of DeSoto staff on Aug. 25, five days after the restaurant’s own closing announcement. “Come visit us, say goodbye, and buy a glass for the memories,” stated Calvin in her post, which was made public to increase visibility.

Past customers who attended the sale also reminisced on the business.

DeSoto brought different types of people together,” said Celeste Talley, who stopped by the building on Tuesday. “It had people of different walks of life.”
