Puente Arizona gathered a group of approximately 100 demonstrators Wednesday morning in a march against deportation practices. Leaders delivered speeches in Spanish at the starting point in Indian Steele Park.

One family in focus was that of Bertha Alicia Avila Medrano, a mother of five children who is currently under detention preceding her deportation. Jessica, Medrano’s daughter who is enrolled at Carl Hayden High School, began crying during her speech about her mother.

The march then proceeded down Central Avenue toward the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement headquarters. Several of the participants were young children from downtown schools, waving flags as they were walked by their parents or rolled in strollers. Medrano’s family led the march with Jessica holding a large portrait of the family.
