Many of Phoenix’s elite politicians were out in full force around the Downtown campus Tuesday night to celebrate former Councilman Greg Stanton’s first-place finish in the city’s mayoral election, placing him in a November runoff with Wes Gullet.
Stanton and a couple hundred campaign supporters gathered at Civic Space Park’s A.E. England Building and celebrated as election returns revealed a large victory over five other candidates.
“I love this room,” Stanton said to a few hundred supporters after results began coming in, likely referring more to the crowd itself than the building.
Stanton earned about 38 percent of the vote, but because he did not earn at least 50 percent a runoff election is scheduled for Nov. 8 between Stanton and challenger Wes Gullett, who earned a a little more than 20 percent.
Incumbent City Councilman Michael Nowakowski also celebrated an easy victory at the rally. Current Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and Terry Goddard, former Arizona attorney general, gubernatorial candidate and Phoenix mayor, were also in attendance.
