Some ASU students feel conflicted about ASU president Micheal Crow’s recent eight percent pay raise given earlier this year.

The Arizona Board of Regents approved Crow for an increase in his base salary.

His previous salary was around $715,000, which is now up to $770,000, a little over a $50,000 increase. President Crow was scheduled to receive an annual rate of 3.5% last year, but did not go through due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, president Crow also receives housing and vehicle allowances, and higher retirement contributions. Bonuses are also given to Crow if he meets certain goals relating to the number of students enrolled and degrees given yearly.

Anitah Diggs, an ASU sophomore, gave her opinion on the issue.

“I think on a macro-level maybe he could deserve a raise because the status of ASU is growing as a better school”, Diggs continued, “But on a micro-level, I still know of some students who think the mental health department at ASU isn’t doing the best job.”

Diggs went on to say that perhaps the university should bolster things like sexual assault resources for victims on campus rather than pay raises for the leaders.

Alyssa Castaneda, another ASU sophomore added that she plainly doesn’t think Crow should be making the amount of money that is present in his yearly salary.

“I feel like as someone who goes to ASU, nothing has really changed significantly enough for him to be getting a huge raise or make the amount of money he does now”, Castaneda said.

Castaneda went on to say that if his salary was reduced or redistributed by a small percentage, more funding could go into ASU’s programs and clubs, as that’s something that affects students and would be beneficial for them.

Castaneda emphasized that maybe Crow could possibly share some of his personal profit with the university and that it’s important for him to be making constant necessary notable changes to deserve the salary he currently has.
