Arizona Students’ Association met on Thursday at the Wells Fargo Student Center to discuss membership and prepare for a march on the Arizona State Capitol.
ASA, a nonprofit student organization dedicated to advocacy for higher education, plans to meet with legislators next week and attend a rally that will take place at the state capitol on March 4 at 4 p.m. The “March4Schools” is expected to have over 1,900 participants, according to a document on the rally’s Web site at www.march4schools.com.
“The legislators need to remember that we’re their bosses, they’re not ours,” said journalism freshman Tania Mendes a Lobby Corp coordinator.
Other topics discussed during the meeting included what ASA and Lobby Corp members can do to improve ASU’s current financial situation and how to get involved with ASA.
The recent budget cuts have affected many downtown students. For instance, the Health Center is now closed on Fridays. One student at the meeting pointed out that professors are now required to have several furlough days during the semester. That means that professors are legally not allowed to do any work with or for their students during those days.
Mendes further commented that any budget cuts made to universities were a bad idea.
“The bottom line is there shouldn’t be any budget cuts,” Mendes said. “The cut should be zero.”
