This summer brought a slew of new businesses downtown, from coffee shops (both mobile and brick-and-mortar) to new apartments. It also saw the closing of two galleries and the Pride Center. Here’s Downtown Devil’s full list of business openings and closings since we’ve been gone:
Openings:
Downtown Phoenix Inc.
The headquarters to the community development group, Downtown Phoenix moved downstairs 12 floors from their previous location. It now includes the Downtown Info Center, DTPHX Engagement Lab and administrative offices in the same location at 1 E Washington.
TuReal Wheelys
The mobile coffee shop owned and operated by Patrick and Maria Real-Tupas serves cold brew and nitro cold brew and organic snacks. The mobile shop made its downtown debut August 3 and is typically found at City Hall from 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and at the downtown ASU campus from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Grand Central Coffee Company
The steampunk-themed cafe currently serves coffee, alcohol and baked goods, but there will soon be expanded menu and service. The shop is currently open from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m., but will be open 24-hours once there’s a full kitchen, according to barista Sarah Baker.
Proxy 333
The 118-unit apartment complex opened up this summer, incorporating street art into the design. It’s located at 333 E. McKinley St. next to Roosevelt Point.
Ike’s Love & Sandwiches
This San Francisco-based sandwich shop’s newest, Phoenix location is at 910 N. Fourth St. and open Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. – 8 p.m; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. – 10 p.m; and Sunday, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Closings:
Phoenix Pride LGBT Center
The Phoenix Pride Center announced its closure August 15. They will continue to have an online presence and work on special projects within the LGBTQ community. The center was located at 801 N. Second Ave.
Five15 and Lotus Contemporary
Both galleries will be closed by the end of the month. The businesses were in the same building, with Five15 at 511 and Lotus Contemporary at 515 E. Roosevelt St.
