Indiana native Marshall Shore has been nicknamed Phoenix's unofficial hipstorian. His show, Retro Spectacular, has been educating audiences about Arizona history in entertaining ways for three years.

The existence of an urban campus at ASU provides the opportunity for a truly unprecedented level of experience-based learning. We are not, however, operating anywhere near optimal levels of interaction, and the tension threatens to disenchant community leaders and students.

This week, get ready to push the envelope. Take in experimental percussion ensembles and jazz experimentation at the Trunk Space; hear horror stories of the past with “hipstorian” Marshall Shore; view postmodern fashion from local favorites UN3EK SY5STEM; think through unconventional lunch-time theater from Improbable Theater Company; and absorb a re-telling of the ever-shocking classic, The Great Gatsby.

Visitors will have the opportunity to see galleries, take tours, visit artists’ studios that are usually closed and learn about public art at Art Detour 24, a free art walk honoring the 24th anniversary of the Phoenix art community.

Don’t doubt things that aren’t familiar. This week, numerous Phoenix figures are bringing the supposedly “dull” and old media of lectures, American history, classical music, blues and jazz into relevance for people of all ages and interests.
