The city of Phoenix recently revamped efforts to create the city’s official Latino Cultural Center, an endeavor in the works since 2001.
The newest attempts to revive the center revolved around the creation of a 10-member ad hoc committee, which convened on April 12. The committee, as well as other subcommittees, will continue to meet throughout June with the goal of setting up the Center.
The Phoenix New Times reported on the Center’s almost two decade-long history, including District 6 Councilman Sal DiCiccio’s criticisms of early feasibility studies.
Additionally, The Arizona Republic covered the possible relocation of the Arizona Latino Arts and Cultural Center, or ALAC, currently located at the Regency Garage. ALAC’s possible relocation gives more urgency, and possibly more influence than other Latino organizations, to the center.
