Brand new public art installations are popping up along the Grand Canalscape as part of the annual Phoenix Mural Festival.
Joe’s Diner on 7th Avenue, which is right next to the trail, is now the canvas for one of this year’s murals.
Artist Pablo Luna said it will be one of the only murals in Phoenix that pays tribute to its own neighborhood directly. Luna’s artwork details local businesses, landmarks, the district’s diversity, and of course, the well-known “Melrose curve” — an irregularity caused by a 1940s engineering mistake that interrupts the city’s otherwise grid-like layout. That particular bend in the street is now part of Phoenix’s gayborhood.
