Downtown Digest: Get nerdy with burlesque or enjoy some family fun on water slides

(Nicole Neri/DD)

I’m back! The Downtown Digest is back again, and I’m your downtown Phoenix guide, T.J. Triolo! Things really seem to be heating up in more ways than one with temperatures this weekend expected to reach over 110 degrees. This makes me wonder: Is the age-old legend about frying an egg on the sidewalk actually possible? This weekend might be a good opportunity to try, but if you’d rather not, here are some interesting events coming up this week.

Bad Movie Mondays with Michael and Anwar
Monday, June 4
Starts at 10 p.m.
Crescent Ballroom
308 N. 2nd Ave.

Local comedians, Anwar Newton and Michael Turner are going to make fun of a lame movie while you watch it. Don’t expect any cinematic masterpieces here, but the duo are going to provide a live, comedic commentary while you watch a terrible movie of the hosts’ choosing, sure to add some fun to your viewing pleasure. This event is free for guests 21 and over.

Global Day of Indigenous Discovery
Tuesday, June 5
Starts at 5 p.m.
Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel
100 N. 1st St.

Native Americans have a major historical and modern presence in Arizona and the Southwest. But how much do you know about Native American culture and history? At this event, you will be able to experience local Native American culture through a variety of activities and demonstrations, including hoop dancing, traditional flute playing, art and storytelling. Of course, food will also be involved. To top it all off, the event is free.

BurlEscapades Returns: a Nerdy Tribute to the Legends!
Friday, June 8
Starts at 8 p.m.
Valley Bar
130 N. Central Ave.

Nerd culture and burlesque shows, may not be exactly the first thing you would expect to be paired together. This shows combines them into one show with a little something for everyone. Featuring BurlEscapades’ acts Mia PiaCherrie’s Labyrinth, Visa V’s SubZero and Primrose Path’s Poison Ivy, this is shaping up to be one nerdy event. Tickets start at $25.

Teen Science Scene: Cheating the System
Saturday, June 9
Stats at 10 a.m.
Arizona Science Center
600 E. Washington St.

Recent trends of professional athletes taking performance-enhancing drugs, also known as “doping” have been spotted across headlines in recent years. This event teaches teenagers how to perform a blood test to find the presence of those drugs in blood. It sounds like a fun event, and will allow teens to combine a passion of sports and science into one and help them learn about real world dangers of doping while identifying which athlete has participated. This event event costs $30, or $25 for members.

Urban H2Oasis
Saturday, June 9
Starts at 10 a.m.
CityScape
1 E. Washington St.

Ah, the joys of giant inflatable water slides. I used to love them when I was younger. At this event, you (or your kids) can enjoy them to your heart’s content when they come to CityScape, along with the splash pad already in CityScape’s courtyard. Although it may not be a permanent water park with towering, 50-foot tall slides, Urban H2Oasis has one big advantage: it’s cheap to enter. Only a $5 dollar donation is needed to enjoy all the fun. Just come and enjoy the slides in one of the only ways to go outside this time of year is cool. Just try not burn to a crisp!

Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the cost to attend the Urban H2Oasis event. The story has been updated to reflect that a minimum $5 donation is needed for entry.
