Hey lovely downtown Phoenix readers, I’m back! It’s your downtown guide, T.J. Triolo. I hope everyone had a good Independence Day and celebrated with barbecuing, swimming and watching firework displays. I certainly did, and even set off a few cheap Walmart fireworks of my own at my parents’ house. Here’s what events are happening this week:
One-on-One Job Search Assistance
Tuesday, July 10
Starts at 9 a.m.
Burton Barr Central Library
1221 N. Central Ave.
I know this is something I could’ve used when I was 16 and looking for my first job. It took me four very long months to find one. Why was it long? Well, I had a driver’s license, but I couldn’t drive, because I had to get a job first to pay for insurance. Don’t go through the same thing I went through. Get some help by meeting with an employment specialist at this event to set your job search on successful path, all for free.
Steve Burton & Bradford Anderson: The Stone Cold & Jackal Show
Wednesday, July 11
Starts at 7:30 p.m.
Stand Up Live
I’ve never seen “General Hospital” before (I can’t say I’m a big fan of soap operas), but actors Steve Burton and Bradford Anderson are doing a comedy show this week at Stand Up Live. Talk about versatility. Going from a soap opera to doing comedy shows is impressive to me! The show features music, a Q&A, and for VIP ticket buyers, time to meet the actors afterward and take a picture with them. Regular tickets cost $49, VIP tickets cost $99.
Lewis Nash Pro Jam Session
Wednesday, July 11
Starts at 7:30 p.m.
The Nash
110 E. Roosevelt St.
Music with no set lists that’s just made up on the fly? Not something I could do. Oh wait, I don’t play instruments anyway! Come see some of the best local jazz musicians improvise music as they play. Leading this jam session will be club namesake Lewis Nash on drums. Tickets cost $15.
Linking Sports and Communities Project Catwalk
Saturday, July 14
6 to 10 p.m.
Phoenix Art Museum
1625 N. Central Ave.
Presented by charities Linking Sports and Communities and Tiny Be Mighty, this is a family-friendly fashion show featuring a DJ, kids’ activities, a raffle and refreshments. Then the star attraction will take place: the catwalk fashion show starring kids as models, including special needs children. If you want to help kids’ charities and dress up (This is a fancy black-tie event, so don’t show up wearing sweatpants!) this event will give you the perfect opportunity. General admission costs $25, VIP tickets cost $55.
2018 FIFA World Cup Final
Sunday, July 15
Starts at 8 a.m.
FilmBar
815 N. 2nd St.
Ah, soccer. My experience with it involves falling down while playing it at the age of six and declaring angrily that I wasn’t okay. For those of you who are fans of soccer and don’t want to spend a lot of money to go to Russia, FilmBar is hosting a viewing party on their big movie screen with surround sound. The $10 entry price includes both food and a pint of beer, which sounds like a pretty good deal to me!
