Hello downtown people! It’s T.J. Triolo, your guide to downtown Phoenix. We’re almost halfway through 2019 now, and I’ve gotta say, it’s going by fast. Since life seems to go by at such a fast pace, that’s all the more reason to enjoy things, like the fun events I have for you here! Don’t stay inside your home all summer just to avoid the scorching heat.
Arizona School for the Arts Showcase 2019
Wednesday, May 29 and Thursday, May 30
Starts at 7 p.m. each night
Orpheum Theatre
203 W. Adams St.
The Arizona School for the Arts teaches students ballet, music and theater. Between my sister and I, we can represent all three of those, so maybe we should try to join in the show performing… even though it’s been a while for ballet for her and theater for me. Seriously though, these kids are probably far more talented at performing arts than I am, so go see what they’ve learned for your entertainment this year! Tickets cost $25–$55.
Bingo Night!
Wednesday, May 29
Starts at 7 p.m.
Gracie’s Tax Bar
711 N. Seventh Ave.
This bingo night is free, so there’s no reason not to go if you’re not too afraid to gamble your money away on bingo. There is also a bar cat, which instantly makes this worth going to. Think about it; playing games and petting a cat sounds like a fun night. Sounds like something that happens every time I visit my parents, except in my parents’ case you have to multiply the one cat by seven.
Phoenix Symphony Broadway Celebration
Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1
Showtimes at 7:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday
Symphony Hall
75 N. Second St.
Like it or not, Broadway has influenced the United States and the world a lot. The Phoenix Symphony will be performing a variety of songs from Broadway shows, including “Phantom of the Opera,” “Wicked,” and the musical that a lot of the country has become obsessed with “Hamilton.” Finally, a way to get kids interested in history! It seems like I’m one of the few people who actually enjoyed history as a subject. And “Wicked” certainly brings back memories; it was the last musical I performed in. Tickets cost $10–$108.
Bicycle Nomad Photoride
Sunday, June 2
Starts at 4 p.m.
Bicycle Nomad Café
828 N. Second St.
Biking with photographers sounds like a great way to get some pretty cool pictures, and that’s exactly what’s going on here. Join in on the group ride, with a meetup starting at 4 p.m. before the group leaves at 5 p.m. I would say “transform and roll out,” but there’s really no way for a bike to transform like a Transformer can. I used to be obsessed with Transformers. Don’t judge. This event is free.
Summer Jazz & Wine in the Garden
Sunday, June 2
6–9 p.m.
Japanese Friendship Garden
1125 N. Third Ave.
Have a relaxing night in a beautiful garden and listen to jazz music at the Japanese Friendship Garden. There is also happy hour pricing on beer, wine and sake. For those old enough to drink alcohol, there will also be free wine samples. Who doesn’t love free things? Tickets cost $7.
