Downtown Digest: Brunch Bash, succulent terrariums and performance competitions

The Herberger Theater Center in downtown Phoenix. (Anya Magnuson/DD)

Hello downtown Phoenix people! It is I, T.J. Triolo, everyone’s favorite guide to local events. Or maybe I’m just my own favorite. Anyway, I have some fun things lined up for you to do this week.
Plant Nite: Pick Your Cup of Love Succulent Garden
Wednesday Feb. 19
6-7:30 p.m.
GenuWine Arizona Wine Bar
888 N. First Ave.
If you’ve been fascinated by succulents but haven’t gotten one of your own yet, then come make a succulent terrarium here. This class will teach you how to build your own, which you’ll take home at the end, and all materials are provided. There will also be drinks available for purchase. Depending on how much you like the little plants, you may end up with half a dozen of them in pots sooner or later. My sister has actually done this, and all the plants have names. This class costs $35 per person.

Cirque Du Soleil “OVO”
Thursday Feb. 20-Sunday Feb. 23
Shows at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 4 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 and 5 p.m. Sunday
Talking Stick Resort Arena
201 E. Jefferson St.
Famous circus performance group Cirque Du Soleil is coming to Phoenix with their show “OVO.” “Ovo” actually means “egg” in Portuguese, and the entire show is insect-themed. This is fitting when you think about how colorful insects are. Personally though, I’d rather see them do an ocean-themed show. On top of that, one with a lot of clownfish costumes. Why? It’s simple: Clownfish are some of the most colorful, adorable creatures ever to exist. Tickets start at $44.

Brunch Bash
Saturday Feb. 22
10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Civic Space Park
424 N. Central Ave.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been hooked on breakfast food ever since I was a picky little kid who wouldn’t eat much of anything. Brunch Bash celebrates great breakfast food by serving up a lot of it, with everything from chicken and waffles to breakfast tacos. There are also traditional breakfast cocktails like mimosas available. To top it all off, proceeds from the festival benefit one n ten, a local charity that helps LGBTQ+ youth. Tickets cost $8 online, $10 at the gate. Food items and drinks are sold separately.

Arizona Young Artists’ Competition
Saturday Feb. 22
Starts at 7 p.m.
Herberger Theater Center
222 E. Monroe St.
This competition is for performers ages 15-20. That means I’m officially too old to enter, even if I did still participate in performing arts. I’m going to go sulk and remind myself that I’m not old. For those who can compete, this performance allows young artists to compete for a $1,500 scholarship to continue a performing arts education in different acting, dance and singing categories. In addition, the Herberger Theater Center and Arizona Broadway Theatre will offer an additional $1,500 scholarship to one additional winner, who will also get the chance to perform with Arizona Broadway Theatre’s professional actors. That’s a lot on the line right there! Tickets cost $10.

Downtown Pedal Around to The Churchill
Sunday Feb. 23
4-7 p.m.
Starts at Civic Space Park
424 N. Central Ave.
Do you have a bike collecting dust? Maybe one with a broken shifter and a flat tire that you haven’t felt like fixing? I’m not speaking from experience or anything here … But this may be the perfect time to dust off your bike and join the Downtown Pedal Around to The Churchill! Starting at Civic Space Park, this group will go on an hour-long ride around town and finish at The Churchill for food and drinks, which are available for an additional cost. This event is free.
