What’s up my downtown people! It’s T.J. Triolo, your guide to downtown Phoenix events. As we get further through February, there seem to be more options for events. Outdoor and indoor, entertainment or food, I have something for you.
Shen Yun 2019
Tuesday, Feb. 19–Sunday, Feb. 24
Evening and afternoon showings available depending on day
Orpheum Theatre
203 W. Adams St.
Chinese culture is very different from our own, making it all the more fascinating to learn about. After all, if we all had the same culture, that would be no fun. Then there would be more generic suburbs like the one I grew up in. This show features Chinese costumes, music and dances for your educational entertainment. Tickets cost $80–$180.

Devour the World
Thursday, Feb. 21
6–9 p.m.
Japanese Friendship Garden
1125 N. Third Ave.
I’m not sure whether to say it’s fitting that a celebration of all kinds of international food is at the Japanese Friendship Garden, or if it being at the Japanese Friendship Garden makes it seem as though Japanese food is the star. Either way, the Japanese Friendship Garden is a beautiful setting for any event. There will also be live entertainment. Tickets cost $75.

Lots and lots of boats. Boats that go on the water. You know, just boaty boats. If you’re looking to buy a boat or just want to go look at boats, then here’s your shot. This show has all the latest boats. If you’re looking for a new cruiser for your favorite lake, maybe you’ll find the perfect one for you here. If you don’t, then find one and name it Boaty McBoatFace.

ASU Ceramic Research Center Artist Studio Tour
Saturday, Feb. 23–Sunday, Feb. 24
10 a.m.–5 p.m. each day
Hjalmarson Clay Art Studio
45 W. Lynwood St.
Clayworking, once a staple of life in the ancient world and has now become an art form. Now’s your chance to see artists working on clay in real life! I’ve had a little experience with it myself when I was a little kid. The bowl I made didn’t turn out too well … It was uneven and kind of weird. This event is free.

Away From Home: American Indian Boarding School Legacies
Saturday Feb. 23
9 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Heard Museum
2301 N. Central Ave.
The Heard Museum is reinstalling its “Boarding School Exhibit” showing what life was like in American Indian boarding schools. You know, when people thought it was okay to send kids to schools to try to get rid of their culture and make them act like white people. This is exactly why this exhibit is important; to make sure we don’t repeat our past mistakes! Come see it for free and make an educational experience out of it.
