Downtown Digest: Karaoke for a Cause and baseball

(Nicole Neri/DD)

Hello to all my readers! It’s your guide to downtown events, T.J. Triolo, back again with another Downtown Digest for you. It looks like the worst of the heat wave is over, which means this week it shouldn’t be over 110 degrees outside. Around here, that’s reason enough to celebrate, so get out and go to one of these great events this week!

Love Connection: Karaoke for a Cause

July 31
Starts at 8 p.m.
Crescent Ballroom
308 N. 2nd Ave.

Want to raise money for a charity while singing karaoke? At this free event, the public is welcome to come sing! For each song, donations will be collected for the Kino Border Initiative to help people affected by the government’s policy of separating undocumented children from their parents. So even if you suck at singing, but want to help you’re more than welcome to come out anyway!

Best of the Next
Aug. 1
Starts at 8 p.m.
Stand Up Live
50 W. Jefferson St.

Here’s a comedy show with names you might not know … yet! Support local comedy at this show, featuring some of the Phoenix area’s best comedians. Who knows, you may be able to come to this show and tell people in the future about the time you saw a big star before they were famous. Tickets cost $10.

Beats by R O I
Aug. 1
Starts at 9 p.m.
Valley Bar
130 N. Central Ave.

Are you feeling stressed out from the combination of life, work and Arizona’s ridiculous heat? Then come relax and listen to some future bass and vaporwave music. While listening to the cool electronic music, go ahead and have a drink. This is, after all, at a bar! The music is free, but if you want any drinks you’ll have to pay for them. More information here.

The Level-Up Showcase
Aug. 2
Starts at 7 p.m.
Crescent Ballroom
308 N. 2nd Ave.

Okay, I know I’m pushing a lot of musical events, but we really should appreciate music! I love listening to it, but I don’t play any instruments and would probably fail an American Idol audition. This event features kids from Trivium Music Lessons’ summer camps, letting them close their camp experiences with a bang. All the camp participants will perform together for a musical showcase to show off what they’ve learned over the summer. This is a free event.

Arizona Diamondbacks Versus San Francisco Giants
Aug. 5
Starts at 1:10 p.m.
Chase Field
401 E. Jefferson St.

Apparently the heat doesn’t deter baseball players because they’re just that crazy, or because they love what they do a lot. It seems to me like they never get a break! Spring training, playing during the summer and into the fall … When does the season end exactly? I would think it would be more fun to do something you love often like that. Now if only I could figure out a way to keep racing cars year-round both financially and without burning to a crisp during the summer. To be fair about the heat, the stadium does have a roof that can close, so this may even be a nice, air-conditioned indoor game. Tickets start at $12.
