Downtown Digest: Light rail meetings and Star Wars Burlesque

What’s up my downtown Phoenix people! It’s T.J. Triolo, your guide to life downtown, or at least events that you can go to. I hope this allergy season hasn’t destroyed you as much as it has me. In other words, I feel bad.But don’t let allergies keep you away from these events ths week!

Light Rail Ballot Measure Info Session
Tuesday April 2
2–2:30 p.m.
Downtown Phoenix Inc.
1 E. Washington St.

Recent controversy and advocacy groups have threatened planned light rail expansions. These groups have gotten enough signatures to get the issue on the ballot, and if people approve the issue then all the planned light rail expansions will be canceled. This is a big issue that impacts a lot of people. So go and get some information from this event and from the Q&A with the Valley Metro CEO. It’s free with an RSVP.

Doing Business With the City of Phoenix
Tuesday April 2
6–7 p.m.
Burton Barr Central Library
1221 N. Central Ave.

If you own a business and are interested in offering your services to the City of Phoenix, then this event will give you the information you need to start working with the city, including how to register as a vendor, making contracts with the city and more. This event is free with registration.

The Empire Strips Back: a Burlesque Parody
Tuesday April 2
Starts at 7:30 p.m.
Comerica Theatre
400 W. Washington St.

I think the raciest thing in the “Star Wars” series was Princess Leia’s gold bikini. This parody burlesque show does away with that as one of the few sexy things in the series. The description mentions “sexy Stormtroopers” and a “seductive Boba Fett.” Does this mean Jabba the Hutt is even more into chaining people up? Tickets cost $39-$79.

AZ Speaks: LGBTQ – a History in Arizona
Wednesday April 3
5–6 p.m.
Burton Barr Central Library
1221 N. Central Ave.

This talk focuses specifically on the history of my people’s community here in Arizona. The event description mentions some stuff that I didn’t even know about, namely a couple of artists and a Nicolai De Raylan. This sounds like it should be pretty interesting, especially given that it’s in the week leading up to Phoenix Pride! This event is free.

Arizona State University Vocal Students
Friday April 5
6–7:30 p.m.
Trinity Episcopal Cathedral
100 W. Roosevelt St.

This First Friday, come see ASU’s vocal students singing a variety of songs on everything from Broadway songs to opera. The First Friday performances go along with some art displayed in the cathedral’s gallery. This event is free.
