Hello my downtown people! It’s T.J. Triolo, and I’m back with another Downtown Digest this week. If you haven’t noticed, we’re approaching that time of the year again: Air conditioners in Arizona are going to start working overtime. If you want to avoid the extra utilities cost, get out! I’ve got some awesome events for you (and some of those places have AC).
49,172 – Bulgaria and the Holocaust
- Tuesday, April 10
- 7 – 9 p.m.
- Arizona Jewish Historical Society
- 122 E. Culver St.
The Arizona Jewish Historical Society is screening 49,172, a documentary about triumph during The Holocaust. The movie highlights Bulgaria’s national attempt to overthrow German influence during World War II as Jewish people from Bulgaria attempt to survive. This event is free.
City Lights Movie Nights – The Wedding Singer
- Friday, April 13
- Starts at 6 p.m.
- CityScape
- 1 E. Washington St.
This is a movie night at CityScape. It should be cool enough outside to enjoy the movie, especially as a chill friend get-together or a cozy date. I haven’t seen this movie in quite a while; My parents have it on a VHS tape that works on my mom’s 20-year-old VCR that somehow still functions. If you want to see a movie that takes place in the 80s that was made in the 90s and features Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. If you haven’t seen this movie, now would be a perfect (and free) opportunity.
March for Babies
- Saturday, April 14
- Starts at 8 a.m.
- Wesley Bolin Plaza
- 1700 W. Washington St.
This is a walk to raise money for the March of Dimes charity dedicated to improving babies’ health. Who doesn’t love babies? Here’s a way you can help them! This doesn’t technically start downtown, but the 2.5-mile route goes into the downtown area and then loops back around to finish close to the start.
Fiesta de las Americas
- Saturday, April 14
- 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
- Heritage Square
- 113 N. 6th St.
It’s time to party! This is a festival celebrating Latin American culture. It will feature Latin drinks like Mexican tequila, traditional Latin dances, handmade arts and crafts and delicious food. The big draw for me is the tamales. Tamales are amazing, and genuine traditional-style tamales are icing on the cake. Just be sure to remove the husks before eating them (yes, I’ve done it before; don’t judge!) Admission costs $5.
Sutra Splash
- Sunday, April 15
- Starts at 10 a.m.
- FOUND:RE Phoenix
- 1100 N. Central Ave.
I could probably use this event; It’s supposed to be relaxing, and I’m almost always stressed out to some degree thanks to my involvement in a lot of school activities. Mellow music and brunch are featured. Oh, and all this is right by a pool. This sounds really nice…if I didn’t have stuff to do on Sunday mornings. The price for this relaxation is nothing; it’s free!
