Downtown Digest: Movies and Little Monsters

Hello downtown Phoenix people! It’s your guide to entertainment downtown, T.J. Triolo. I’ve got a fresh round of events this week for you in case you haven’t found something to do yet. So if you don’t have something going on this weekend already, don’t just sit around bored; give something listed here a try!

Grand Canyon: 100 Years of Stories
Tuesday April 16
Doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m.
Crescent Ballroom
308 N. Second Ave.

The Arizona Republic is hosting a storytelling night dedicated to the Grand Canyon turning 100 years old. More specifically, it’s to celebrate the National Park turning 100 years old. Tickets cost $12. Students get a $5 discount.

Movie in the Park: Moana
Friday April 19
Starts at 7 p.m.
Civic Space Park
424 N. Central Ave.

If you haven’t been to the movies in a while, go ahead and do it outdoors! This screening of Moana will be in Civic Space Park, so it’s the perfect opportunity to relax on the grass while watching a movie. Moana is also definitely worth seeing. I think the best part of the movie though is the stupid chicken that would probably die if Moana didn’t keep it alive. After all, how many chickens are stupid enough to peck at the ground and eating nothing? This event is free.

FRIED French Fry and Music Festival
Saturday April 20
2–10 p.m.
Margaret T. Hance Park
1202 N. Third St.

I’m not sure who thought of combining French fries and music as the topic of a festival, but it sounds like a good combination to me. After all, French fries are good and so is music; therefore, this is gonna be a great event. There will be a bigger variety of different fry types in one place than I’ve ever seen before, along with DJs and indie bands playing music. Some of the fry types do sound a little strange to me though; how do you make clam chowder fries? Now if they could just make chocolate fries, then I’d have to try those. It might not be a good combination of flavors, but chocolate rules my life. Tickets cost $15, excluding the cost of fries.

Doorways and Alleyways Ghost Tour
Saturday April 20
6–7:30 p.m.
Phoenix Rising Tour Company
125 N. Second St.

There’s a ghost in yo house cuz! This tour gives you a chance to learn about downtown’s paranormal history. Be it ghosts, spirits or just figments of your imagination, there are some not-so-normal spots downtown. The only question is this: Are the ghosts more like Casper the Friendly Ghost, or the spirits from Poltergeist? Tickets cost $15.

Little Monsters: the Lady Gaga Ball
Saturday April 20
Starts at 10 p.m.
Crescent Ballroom
308 N. Second Ave.

Are you caught in a bad romance? Can no one read your poker face? If you catch these references, then you just may be one of Lady Gaga’s fans, also known as “Little Monsters.” This dance party is an homage to the great Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, with the soundtrack consisting entirely of her music and featuring her music videos. All you need to remember if you see people in crazy costumes here is that baby, you were born this way. Tickets cost $12.
