Hello, Downtown Devil readers! Happy Labor Day. We’re back from our months-long hiatus.

My name is Michelle Ailport, and I am the arts and entertainment editor. I also am taking over the Downtown Digest, so I’ll be your guide to in-person and virtual events in downtown Phoenix each week.

School is officially in full swing, but that doesn’t mean the summer fun stops. Here’s this week’s lineup:

Trivia Tuesdays

Tuesday, Sept. 7 with sign-ups at 7 p.m. and trivia at 8 p.m.

Location: Thunderbird Lounge at 710 W. Montecito Ave.

Happening in the Melrose District, this free trivia night features prizes from Cowtown Skateboards, Zia Records, Changing Hands and more. DJ Hart Breaks will be playing tracks at this 21+ event.  

Pay What You Wish Wednesday

Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 3 – 7 p.m.

Location: Phoenix Art Museum at 1625 N. Central Ave.

Sativa Peterson: Revealing History – A Look at Community Through Arizona’s Historical Newspapers

Thursday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.

Location: Virtual event hosted by Changing Hands Bookstore.

During this free event, Sativa Peterson, the news content program manager for the State of Arizona Research Library, will introduce attendees to Arizona’s historical newspapers. Attendees will also learn about women who edited and published Arizona newspapers. Register here

ADMIXT ARTS: Writing * And *

Thursday through Saturday, Sep. 9 to 11.

Location: Step Gallery at Grant Street Studios at 605 E. Grant Street.

This exhibit features mixed media art by Arizona State University graduate students.

Lucha Libre Wrestling

Saturday, Sept. 11 at 8 p.m.

Location: Crescent Ballroom at 308 N. 2nd Ave.

Perhaps your only experience with luchadors is Jack Black in “Nacho Libre.” Or you’re a die-hard fan. But regardless, this 21+ event is sure to excite. The first Lucha Libre event of 2021 features wrestlers Lord Drako, The Bonus Boyz RMB, El Dragon, Hijo del Impostor, Chris Evans, Johnny Saovi, Red Miracle, The Prophet and more. General admission tickets are $12, and ringside tickets are $20.

Shared Roots: Community Herbalism Learning Circle (First Aid – Tincture and Salve Making)

Sunday, September 12 at 12 – 2 p.m.

Location: Palabras Bilingual Bookstore at 906 W. Roosevelt Street.

Led by Chawa Magana and RE:FRAME Youth Arts Center, the first session in the series will focus on making a creosote-based healing salve and a pineapple-based healing tincture. The session is intended for Black, Indigenous, Latinx and Pan-Asian community members, with young people and South Phoenix community members prioritized, according to an Instagram post by RE:FRAME Youth Arts Center. All materials are included with registration, and attendance is on a pay-what-you-can basis. Register here.
