Hello, lovely downtown Phoenix people! It’s your favorite guide to downtown Phoenix events, T.J. Triolo. I’ve got a nice lineup of events coming up this week, including one that involves doughnuts. I’m a dessert fiend, so doughnuts are great in my book. Oops, now I want one. Anyway, here’s my list of recommended events for this week!
Plant Nite
Monday Nov. 12
Starts at 6 p.m.
GenuWine Arizona Wine Bar
888 N. 1st Ave. Ste. 101
Do you dig plants? Can you dig it? Then plant succulents in a mini garden inside a globe while drinking wine. The mini gardens also have these things called fairy lights inside of them that look like little fireflies. They look cute, but I’d probably somehow manage to break one if I tried making it. This event costs $56, excluding the price of food and drinks.
Elf: The Musical
Wednesday Nov. 14–Sunday Nov. 18
7:30 p.m. every day, 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
Phoenix Theatre
100 E. McDowell Rd.
I’m in a store, and I’m singing … I’m in a store, and I’m singing! I’d better stop before I start quoting too much from Elf. It’s one of my favorite Christmas movies, and it’s also got a musical version! I’ve gotta see the musical version at some point, and you should too. The Phoenix Theatre is running shows from November 14 all the way through December 30, giving you plenty of chances to go. Tickets cost $36-$96.
Phoenix Pizza Festival
11 a.m.–5 p.m.
Margaret T. Hance Park
1202 N. 3rd St.
It’s time to come together and celebrate a great Italian tradition: pizza. This festival will involve more than 20 pizza vendors and craft beer and wine. Pizzas will be available by the slice or larger. Let the battle of the pizzas begin! Only afterward can you call yourself a true pizza connoisseur. Admission costs $10 per person, excluding pizza and drinks.
Urbanization and Daily Life at Teotihuacan
1–2:30 p.m.
Phoenix Art Museum
1625 N. Central Ave.
Archaeologists, historians and curators are coming together for a lecture about life in Teotihuacan, an ancient city in Mexico. Artifacts from the site are located in an exhibit at the Phoenix Art Museum, providing even more of a glimpse into life in ancient times. I don’t think I could have lived in ancient times; I would have had to survive without air conditioning or heat, aside from fire, but learning about it sounds fun. Tickets cost $23.
Downtown Donut Festival
11 a.m.–3 p.m.
Margaret T. Hance Park
1202 N. 3rd St.
Yes, two food festivals are going on in Hance Park over the course of two days. After eating some pizza on Saturday, head over on Sunday for doughnuts! More than 20 doughnut vendors will be on hand to sell some of the most amazing breakfast pastries around. There will also be beer here from local breweries. Admission costs $8 per person, excluding food and drinks.
